Workshop/Shows

Bomba de AquÍ is a dance and music company that performs and teaches Afro-Puerto Rican traditions in throughout western Massachusetts and central Connecticut area. We provide workshops at public schools, colleges, churches and other community venues. We educate the community about the history of Afro-Puerto Rican music, foster understanding of the richness of Puerto Rican arts, and encourage active participation in that heritage. This is particularly important for Latino/a students. (Non-Latino/a students are of course also included!). Instruction is in both Spanish and English.

🌺 Fiesta de la Cruz (La Cruz de Mayo) – Puerto Rico Tradition

  • The tradition honors the Holy Cross, symbolizing protection, faith, and blessings. It merges Catholic religious practices with Puerto Rican folk culture.

    Decorated Crosses (Cruces Decoradas):

    • A cross—usually wooden—is beautifully decorated with fresh flowers, ribbons, candles, and sometimes fruits or colored cloths.

    • These crosses are displayed in homes, churches, community plazas, or along roadsides.

  • Rosarios Cantados (Sung Rosaries):

    • Groups gather to pray the rosary, often singing each mystery with traditional melodies.

    • These sung rosaries are usually accompanied by jíbaro instruments like the cuatro, güiro, and maracas.

Join us on May 31st for an inspiring evening as we spotlight local writers sharing their words, stories, and passions. From poetry and fiction to memoir and spoken word, this event celebrates the rich literary talent in our own community.

What to Expect:

  • Live readings from featured local authors

  • Book signings & meet-the-writer moments

  • A welcoming space for creativity, connection, and storytelling
